Destiny tells the story of three Vietnamese ladies, who hold the power to change their destiny, as they actively seek for their partner in a foreign country. They believe that fate will lead them to their destined partner. Through in-depth interviews with the ladies, family members and the matchmaker, the documentary reveals the ladies’ inner hopes, fears and aspirations, and how marrying to Singapore can help improve their families’ standards of living. Through the ladies’ narration, audiences witness the reality of the struggles and hardships the ladies face in search of a better future. The film depicts the lives of the girls through the hometowns that they grew up in and their interactions with family members. The ladies envision a new life in Singapore as they embark on a journey in search of their future partner.

Director's Message:

Marriage migration has been an ongoing and increasing trend in Singapore. Foreign brides come over to Singapore in search of a better future. This documentary features three Vietnamese girls who share their stories and motivations in marrying to Singapore.

About the filmmaker

 

Director: Grace (left most in photo) is a Journalism major from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technolgical University in Singapore. She directed her first documentary, Destiny, featuring the inner hopes, fears and aspirations of Vietnamese women who want to marry to Singaporean men.

 

Producer: Charis (center in 2nd row) and Nikki (right most) are Broadcast, Cinema and Film Studies majors from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. They were the Executive Producer and Line Producer respectively for Destiny, and helped in arranging for the shoots during the team's stay in Vietnam.
